In recent years, liposuction has shed its image as a procedure exclusively for women. Today, many men choose liposuction to remove unwanted fat from specific areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. These areas include the abdomen, chest, flanks, back, thighs, and buttocks. Liposuction removes subcutaneous fat located just beneath the skin, not the fat surrounding internal organs. It is not a solution for obesity, nor can it replace exercise and diet. Instead, it aims to create a more symmetrical figure by improving body contour and proportions. It yields better results in patients with good skin tone who are at a relatively normal weight but have localized fat deposits.
During the surgery, multiple very small incisions are made through which a blunt cannula is inserted. With the help of the cannula, the fat located under the skin is broken up and suctioned out. It is possible to suction multiple body areas simultaneously, although the plastic surgeon will limit the liposuction to the amount of fat that can be safely removed in a single procedure. Postoperatively, bruising may occur, and the use of a special surgical compression garment, designed for men and worn discreetly under clothing, is required. Its purpose is to reduce swelling and accelerate skin recovery.
