Age, sun exposure, and hereditary factors contribute to the formation of wrinkles, deep furrows, and puffiness around the eyes, resulting in a tired or aged appearance. Blepharoplasty is a procedure designed to restore a more youthful and rested look to the eye area. It can also improve your field of vision if excess skin on the upper eyelid obstructs your peripheral and upper vision. Blepharoplasty can involve either the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both.
The procedure can be performed under sedation or light general anesthesia and typically lasts about 1-2 hours, depending on whether the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both are corrected. Incisions are made in the natural creases of the upper and lower eyelids, and once healed, they are not visible. During surgery, a portion of excess skin and fat is removed from the eyelid, and the muscles and fat surrounding the eye are repositioned. Although blepharoplasty is not a painful procedure, it causes significant bruising and swelling in the area, which usually subsides within about a week. The very fine sutures placed during surgery are removed 7 days after the procedure, after which makeup can be applied. Contact lenses, if used, can be reinserted 2 weeks after the surgery.
