Liposuction removes unwanted subcutaneous fat from specific areas that do not respond to diet and exercise. These areas include the buttocks, thighs, abdomen, knees, face, neck, and arms. Liposuction yields better results in patients with good skin tone who are at a relatively normal weight but have localized fat deposits. Liposuction is not a solution for obesity. Its aim is to create a more attractive figure by improving body contour and proportions.

During the surgery, multiple very small incisions are made through which a blunt cannula is inserted. With the help of the cannula, fat located under the skin is broken down and aspirated. It is possible to aspirate multiple body areas simultaneously, although the plastic surgeon will limit the liposuction to the amount of fat that can be safely removed in the same procedure. Postoperatively, ecchymoses (bruises) may appear, and the use of a surgical corset is necessary for several weeks to reduce edema (swelling) and aid skin recovery.
