Human skin can develop, in addition to basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, other lesions. Some of these are classified as precancerous lesions, while others are malignant. All these lesions are typically identified by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon during patient examination, and their removal is decided upon. Their excision is often considered the cure for the lesion, but sometimes the definitive diagnosis is made after the histopathological report.

The removal is performed under local anesthesia, the lesion is sent for histopathological examination, and post-operatively the patient returns home. In cases where the lesion is extensive and requires significant removal of skin and subcutaneous tissues, plastic surgery can utilize a variety of surgical flaps, which are cleverly designed in the adjacent skin to achieve closure of the problematic area.
