Rhytidectomy, or more commonly known as a face lift, is a surgical procedure designed to restore a more youthful appearance to the neck, jawline, and cheek (malar area), aiming to eliminate deep wrinkles and loose skin. If there is excess fat in the neck or chin area, it can be addressed simultaneously either with liposuction or direct excision. A face lift can correct a tired facial appearance by smoothing the skin and restoring clear lines between the neck and the jawline, while also repositioning the cheek to its former, higher position. It is often combined with other procedures such as a forehead lift and blepharoplasty to achieve an overall harmonious and youthful result.

The surgery requires general anesthesia and typically lasts 4 hours. Modern face lifting techniques now utilize a vertical vector for tissue elevation and involve incisions placed within the natural creases of the face, specifically just in front of the ear (short-scar face lift), thereby avoiding any incision behind the ear. This new technique, which replaces the older lateral vector of tissue pull, provides a more natural result. During the procedure, partial detachment of the facial skin is performed in the area in front of the ear and up to the mid-cheek, followed by tightening and lifting of the facial and neck muscles. After the removal of excess skin, it is then re-sutured.

Postoperatively, patients may have a small silicone drain for the first night, as well as a bandage protecting the head and neck. After the bandage is removed, wearing a compression band that covers the ears is necessary for one week. All sutures are removed 7 days after surgery, but most patients feel ready for social appearances after 2-3 weeks.
