Patients who are dissatisfied with the size and shape of their nose can undergo rhinoplasty to reshape it. If there is a coexisting breathing difficulty, rhinoplasty can be combined with septoplasty. During the surgery, nasal deviation can be corrected, the nasal tip can be refined, and the shape can be narrowed. This can improve the nose’s proportion relative to other facial features, resulting in a smoother and more harmonious appearance.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia, and the patient can return home on the same day. Post-operatively, in addition to the nose area, the eyelid area may also show significant edema (swelling) and many ecchymoses (bruises). After the surgery, special gauze is placed inside the nose, which is removed after a few days. Usually, the patient wears a small external splint on the nose, which is removed in 7-10 days. If sutures have been placed inside the nose, these are absorbable, while any external sutures are removed one week after the procedure. The rhinoplasty incisions are placed in the columella, the structure between the two nostrils and in the center of the nose, and are not at all visible. The final result of rhinoplasty may not be apparent for several months, and it usually takes a full year to assess the final appearance.
