Lower limb injuries are a common occurrence in daily life and can sometimes threaten the integrity of the limb. Plastic surgery works closely with orthopedics to achieve the closure of large and complex limb injuries, which are typically encountered after falls at work, in outdoor and indoor environments, and after car accidents.

Management requires close coordination between both specialties so that the orthopedic surgeon can temporarily or permanently repair any potential fractures in the area, and then, during the same surgical procedure, the plastic surgeon can proceed with wound closure. The operation requires general anesthesia, and the duration of the patient’s hospital stay is jointly decided based on the extent of the injury.

The plastic surgeon selects various closure methods depending on the extent of the wound, its location, the necessary orthopedic manipulations, and the presence or absence of coexisting damage to surrounding tissues. Reconstruction can be achieved either by simple skin transfer from other distant parts of the body or with specially designed surgical flaps, which involve transferring muscles and subcutaneous tissues from adjacent body areas to the injured site.

Lower limb injuries, especially those considered complex, require immediate and combined treatment to ensure proper management for both functional and aesthetic restoration.
