Abdominal surgeries can sometimes lead to postoperative abdominal hernias. An abdominal hernia is a weakening of the abdominal wall and the formation of a sac in which abdominal organs can become trapped. It usually appears after previous abdominal surgeries but sometimes spontaneously. Plastic surgery works closely with general surgery to repair such a defect.

The procedure requires general anesthesia, a hospital stay of one or two days, the use of a special postoperative body corset for one month, and avoidance of any physical exercise and sports for several weeks.

During the surgery, the general surgeon reduces the hernia and checks the internal organs of the abdominal area, while the plastic surgeon then undertakes to repair the laxity of the rectus abdominis muscles, place special synthetic or biological meshes, and close the surgical wound in layers to achieve the best possible aesthetic result.

In cases where the postoperative abdominal hernia is extensive and there is muscle loss, special flaps are designed, and muscles from adjacent body areas are used to enhance the stability of the repair and prevent any future recurrence.

The incision is designed in the lower abdomen, similar to the incision made for abdominoplasty, and can be easily covered by underwear or a swimsuit. Postoperatively, scar healing is closely monitored with clinic visits, and the use of a special silicone adhesive tape over the wound is often recommended.
