A laceration is a superficial injury to the skin and sometimes to the subcutaneous tissues in various areas of the body, often resulting from accidents in daily life, either at home or outdoors. Children are quite frequently injured, mainly in the facial area, and these wounds can often heal in a disfiguring way. This can cause parents to worry about the scars and feel guilty about potential emotional distress for their children later in life, especially when interactions at school might lead to ridicule due to the scar.

Suturing a lacerated wound by a plastic surgeon ensures the best possible wound closure, placement of the scar in inconspicuous areas where possible, and post-operative scar care to minimize the chance of a disfiguring scar and achieve the best aesthetic outcome.

For large lacerations accompanied by skin deficits, plastic surgery can utilize a variety of surgical flaps, cleverly designed from adjacent skin, to achieve closure of the injured area.

Most of the time, only local anesthesia is required. However, if the patient is very young and the wound is extensive, it is not possible for a child to understand the seriousness of the situation. In these cases, in cooperation with a specialized pediatric anesthesiologist, a type of light general anesthesia or sedation can be administered to achieve wound closure. Postoperatively, special dressings are used in the area so that the young patient cannot remove them on their own, and the child returns home.
